4.7 from 117 reviews

Traditional Fire Cider is a vibrant, herbal tonic made by steeping a blend of fresh onions, ginger, turmeric, cranberries, lemon, garlic, habaneros, spices, and herbs in raw apple cider vinegar. This potent elixir is known for its immune-boosting properties and can be enjoyed straight or sweetened with honey or maple syrup. It requires minimal preparation but needs a 4-week steeping period to fully develop its bold flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Fire Cider Blend

  • ½ cup chopped yellow onion
  • ½ cup chopped fresh ginger
  • ½ cup chopped fresh turmeric
  • ½ cup halved cranberries
  • 1 organic lemon, chopped
  • 10 garlic cloves, diced
  • 2 habanero peppers, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
  • 1 sprig fresh rosemary
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Liquid

  • 500 ml raw apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Begin by chopping and preparing all the fresh ingredients as listed: onions, ginger, turmeric, cranberries, lemon, garlic, habaneros, and gather your herbs and spices.
  2. Layer Ingredients: Place all the prepared ingredients gently into a large glass jar, ideally a quart-sized jar, layering them evenly to distribute flavors.
  3. Add Vinegar: Pour raw apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until they are fully submerged. Use a fermentation weight, a piece of parchment paper, or a ziplock bag filled with vinegar to keep the solids submerged beneath the liquid.
  4. Seal and Store: Cover the jar tightly with an airtight lid. Place the jar in a spot in your kitchen where you will see it daily to remember to shake or swirl it at least once or twice a day. Keep the jar out of direct sunlight, preferably in a bright but shaded area.
  5. Steep: Allow the mixture to steep for a minimum of 4 weeks. This time lets all the flavors and beneficial properties infuse into the vinegar.
  6. Strain: After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to separate the liquid from the solids.
  7. Sweeten & Store: Transfer the strained fire cider into a clean jar. Optionally, sweeten with high-quality local honey or maple syrup to taste if you prefer a milder flavor. Store the fire cider in a cool place or refrigerate to prolong shelf life.

Notes

  • Using raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with the ‘mother’ adds beneficial enzymes and probiotics.
  • Adjust the number of habaneros according to your heat tolerance; they add a spicy kick and aid circulation.
  • Shake the jar daily to ensure even infusion and prevent mold growth.
  • If you don’t have parchment paper or a fermentation weight, a clean ziplock bag filled with vinegar works well to keep solids submerged.
  • Fire cider can be taken as a shot, diluted with water, or used as a flavorful addition to dressings and marinades.
  • Longer steeping (up to 6 weeks) intensifies flavor but is not necessary.
