Ingredients

Scale

Tea Base

  • 1 tbsp Jasmine green tea or black tea leaves
  • 2 cups Hot water (ideally at 176ºF / 80ºC)
  • 4 tbsp Taro powder

Milk and Ice

  • 1/3 cup Milk (half and half, cream, or dairy-free alternative)
  • Ice (optional)

Boba Pearls

  • 1/2 cup Uncooked tapioca pearls (quick-cook or homemade)
  • 5 cups Water (to cook the pearls)

Brown Sugar Syrup

  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Water (to make syrup)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Tapioca Pearls: For homemade pearls, follow your specific recipe. For store-bought quick-cook boba, cook in boiling water per package instructions, usually 3-5 minutes. After cooking, drain the pearls, then rinse them with cold water, or place them in a bowl of cold water, or immediately transfer them into the brown sugar syrup to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the Brown Sugar Syrup: While the boba cooks, combine equal parts water and brown sugar in a small pot. Heat over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves. Let it simmer gently for 3-5 minutes until syrup thickens slightly, then remove from heat. Stir the cooked boba into the syrup and allow them to soak for 40-60 minutes to absorb the flavor.
  3. Brew the Jasmine Tea: Heat water to about 176ºF/80ºC without boiling. Steep the jasmine green tea leaves or tea bag for 5 minutes. Remove the tea leaves or bag. Immediately stir in the taro powder until fully dissolved and combined. Allow the tea to cool, especially if preparing iced milk tea.
  4. Put Together the Taro Milk Tea: Use tall glasses for serving. Add the boba pearls along with the brown sugar syrup to the glasses. Add ice if desired. Pour in the cooled taro jasmine tea, then add milk or cream. Stir gently to combine all the flavors and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Use jasmine green tea for a floral aroma or black tea for a stronger base.
  • Adjust milk type and quantity to suit dietary preferences or creaminess.
  • Soaking boba pearls in syrup enhances their sweetness and chewiness.
  • For iced tea, ensure tea is completely cooled before adding ice and milk.
  • Homemade tapioca pearls may require longer cooking times; refer to specific recipes.
