Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe

4.8 from 108 reviews

This Slow Cooker Apple Butter recipe transforms a mix of sweet and tart apples into a thick, smooth, and richly flavored spread with warm cinnamon and spices. Slow cooking allows the natural pectin in the apples to break down and thicken, creating a caramel-like apple butter perfect for toast, oatmeal, baking, or as a cozy gift. The easy, hands-off method uses a slow cooker to develop deep flavors over 10 to 12 hours and finishes with a quick thickening step for perfect spreadability.

Ingredients

Scale

Apple Butter Ingredients

  • 6 pounds apples (about 12 to 16 medium apples), peeled, cored, and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/2 cup apple cider (or unsweetened apple juice)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Peel and Cut the Apples: Peel, core, and cut 6 pounds of apples into small 1-inch chunks, aiming for uniform size so they soften evenly during cooking.
  2. Fill the Slow Cooker: Place the apple chunks in a 6-quart crockpot. Evenly sprinkle 1 cup packed light brown sugar, 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves, and 1/4 teaspoon fine salt over the apples.
  3. Add the Liquid and Cook: Pour 1/2 cup apple cider and 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice over the apples. Cover and cook on LOW for 10 to 12 hours until apples soften, darken, and are easy to mash. Stir occasionally if nearby.
  4. Blend Until Smooth: Stir in 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract. Using an immersion blender, blend the cooked apples directly in the crockpot to a completely smooth consistency, keeping the blender submerged to avoid splashing.
  5. Thicken the Apple Butter: Remove the lid and cook on HIGH for 30 to 60 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes, until the mixture darkens, thickens, and holds a visible spoon trail.
  6. Cool and Serve: Turn off the slow cooker and allow the apple butter to cool, thickening further. Spoon into clean jars for storage or serve warm.

Notes

  • Use a mix of sweet and tart apples (such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith) for best flavor complexity.
  • Do not add extra water; apples release enough juice as they cook.
  • You can reduce the brown sugar to 1/2 to 3/4 cup for a less sweet apple butter.
  • Leave out cloves if you prefer a milder spice profile.
  • To make chunkier apple butter, blend less thoroughly.
  • The apple butter thickens more as it cools; judge final texture after cooling.
  • Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Use clean spoons when serving to prevent contamination.
  • This recipe is not tested for canning; do not attempt shelf-stable home canning without proper methods.
  • Handle the immersion blender carefully to avoid hot splashes.
