Ingredients

Scale

Tea Base

  • 2 cups Water
  • 2 black tea bags or 2 teaspoons loose black tea (Assam or Darjeeling preferred)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 inch piece grated fresh ginger or 1/4 tsp ground ginger

Flavorings & Sweetener

  • 1/2 vanilla bean, split and scraped or 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp sugar (or to taste)

Milk & Serving

  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based such as almond or oat milk)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional garnishes: sprinkle of cinnamon, vanilla pods, or star anise

Instructions

  1. Brew the Chai: In a small saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the tea bags, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger. Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes to infuse the spices into the water.
  2. Add Vanilla and Sweetener: Remove the saucepan from heat. Add the scraped seeds and pod of the vanilla bean or vanilla extract. Stir in sugar, adjusting sweetness to preference.
  3. Cool the Mixture: Remove the tea bags and strain the mixture through a fine sieve. Let the tea cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until fully chilled to avoid melting the ice and watering down the drink.
  4. Prepare the Milk: Froth cold milk using a blender, milk frother, or by shaking vigorously in a tightly sealed jar to create a creamy texture.
  5. Pour the Tea into a Glass: Fill a large glass about two-thirds full with ice cubes and pour the chilled chai tea over the ice.
  6. Add Frothed Milk: Slowly pour the frothed milk over the chai tea to create beautiful swirling patterns and a creamy finish.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Garnish the latte with a sprinkle of cinnamon, vanilla pod pieces, or star anise. Serve immediately and enjoy the invigorating iced vanilla chai latte.

Notes

  • Ensure the chai tea is fully cooled before adding to ice to prevent dilution.
  • Adjust sweetness according to taste, or substitute sugar with honey or a sugar alternative.
  • Use strong black tea varieties like Assam or Darjeeling for the best flavor.
  • Plant-based milks like almond or oat milk work well for a dairy-free option.
  • Frothing the milk enhances the texture and presentation but is optional.
