Ingredients

Scale

Cake Base

  • 1 box Duncan Hines cake mix (vanilla)
  • 4 eggs (room temperature)
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1 cup sour cream

Vanilla Pudding Layer

  • 4 oz vanilla instant pudding mix
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Fruit Layer

  • 2.5 cups strawberries, hulled and sliced into 1/4-inch pieces
  • 2 cups raspberries
  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest

Whipped Topping

  • 6 cups whipped topping (Cool Whip)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, milk, oil, and sour cream. Mix on medium speed for about 2 minutes until the batter is smooth and well blended.
  2. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9×13-inch baking pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool fully.
  3. Make the Pudding Mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the vanilla instant pudding mix and vanilla extract. Let it set for 5 minutes until thickened.
  4. Prepare the Fruit: Wash and prepare the strawberries by hulling and slicing into 1/4-inch pieces. Combine strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and lemon zest in a separate bowl and gently toss.
  5. Assemble the Trifle: Cut the cooled cake into cubes. In a large trifle dish or individual glasses, layer one-third of the cake cubes at the bottom. Spread one-third of the pudding mixture over the cake, spoon one-third of the whipped topping, and then sprinkle one-third of the mixed berries on top. Repeat the layers two more times, ending with a layer of berries and whipped topping.
  6. Chill the Trifle: Refrigerate the trifle for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the pudding to set.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs and milk for better batter consistency.
  • You can substitute Cool Whip with homemade whipped cream for a fresher taste.
  • For added texture, sprinkle chopped nuts or granola between layers if desired.
  • Use fresh, ripe berries for the best flavor and presentation.
  • The trifle can be assembled a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator.
