Cake Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Frosting Ingredients

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Decoration Ingredients

  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate
  • 6 ounces white chocolate

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cake layers.
  2. Prepare Pans: Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to prevent sticking and ensure easy removal.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Into the dry mix, add the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract.
  5. Mix Batter: Using a hand mixer or stand mixer on medium speed, mix the ingredients until the batter is smooth and all components are well incorporated.
  6. Add Boiling Water: Carefully pour in the boiling water and mix until the batter is uniform in consistency. The batter will be thin—this is normal.
  7. Divide Batter: Evenly pour the batter into the two prepared cake pans, smoothing the surface.
  8. Bake Cakes: Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool in Pans: Remove cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes to set.
  10. Remove from Pans: Turn the cakes out onto wire racks and cool completely before frosting.
  11. Whip Cream: While cakes cool, whip the heavy cream in a mixing bowl until stiff peaks form.
  12. Prepare Cream Cheese Mixture: In a separate bowl, beat the cream cheese with powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
  13. Combine Frosting: Gently fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture to create a light, fluffy frosting.
  14. Frost First Layer: Place one cake layer on your serving plate and spread a generous layer of frosting over it.
  15. Assemble Cake: Set the second cake layer on top of the frosted layer and apply frosting to the entire outside of the cake.
  16. Melt Semi-Sweet Chocolate: Melt the semi-sweet chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second intervals, stirring between each, until smooth and fully melted.
  17. Drizzle Semi-Sweet Chocolate: Drizzle the melted semi-sweet chocolate over the top of the frosted cake to create a decorative effect.
  18. Melt White Chocolate: Melt the white chocolate using the same method as the semi-sweet chocolate.
  19. Drizzle White Chocolate: Drizzle melted white chocolate over the cake in a complementary decorative pattern.
  20. Set Chocolate: Allow the finished cake to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes so the chocolate drizzles can set properly before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, allow all ingredients to come to room temperature before mixing.
  • If you prefer a less sweet cake, reduce the granulated sugar by 1/4 cup.
  • The boiling water helps the cocoa powder bloom, intensifying the chocolate flavor and creating a moist texture.
  • The cake can be stored covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerated for up to 5 days.
  • To enhance decoration, use piping bags to create more intricate chocolate drizzle designs.
  • Make sure to cool the cakes completely before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
