Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 1/3 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 5 tsp red food coloring
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for coating)

Instructions

  1. In a small mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside. This will ensure even distribution of dry ingredients in the cookies.
  2. In the bowl of a standing mixer, whip the softened butter and granulated sugar until fluffy. Creaming the butter and sugar together helps create a light and airy texture for the cookies.
  3. Mix in eggs one at a time, until combined after each addition. Mix in milk, vanilla, and red food coloring. Incorporating the wet ingredients gradually ensures a smooth batter.
  4. Slowly add in dry ingredients on low speed and mix just until combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for 1 1/2 hours or until firm enough to shape into balls. Chilling the dough enhances the flavors and makes it easier to handle.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Pour powdered sugar into a small bowl. Preparing the powdered sugar for coating the cookies.
  6. Remove the chilled dough from the refrigerator, scoop out dough and shape into balls (about 2 tablespoons each) with buttered hands. Shaping the dough into balls ensures uniform cookies.
  7. Roll the balls into the powdered sugar and evenly coat. Place the covered balls on a baking sheet and flatten slightly, then bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes. Coating the cookies in powdered sugar gives them the characteristic crinkle appearance.
  8. Once baked, let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container. Allowing the cookies to cool ensures the perfect texture.

Notes

  • For a richer chocolate flavor, use dark cocoa powder.
