Oven-Baked Cabbage Burgers are a delicious, low-carb twist on traditional burgers. Thick cabbage slices act as a healthy, flavorful base topped with a savory ground beef mixture seasoned with smoked paprika and Worcestershire sauce. Baked to perfection and finished under the broiler with melted cheese, these burgers are a nutritious and satisfying meal option.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cabbage Burgers

  • 1 small head of cabbage, cut into thick slices (about ½-inch thick)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, for brushing

For the Burger Mixture

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 egg (optional, for binding)
  • ½ cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your favorite)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Prepare the Cabbage: Slice the cabbage into thick rounds approximately ½-inch thick. Brush both sides of each slice generously with olive oil and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Mix the Burger Ingredients: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef (or turkey), finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, Worcestershire sauce, and the optional egg if using. Mix everything thoroughly to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed.
  4. Assemble the Burgers: Take a handful of the meat mixture and press it firmly onto each cabbage slice, shaping it into a burger patty that covers the cabbage evenly.
  5. Bake the Burgers: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes until the meat is cooked through and cabbage starts to soften.
  6. Add Cheese and Broil: Remove the baking sheet from the oven, sprinkle shredded cheese evenly on top of each burger, then switch the oven to broil. Broil for 3-5 minutes until the cheese melts and becomes slightly golden and bubbly.
  7. Serve and Garnish: Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm with your favorite condiments such as sour cream or mustard, or alongside a fresh salad for a complete meal.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • The egg is optional but helps bind the meat mixture together for easier handling.
  • Use any cheese you prefer or omit it for a dairy-free version.
  • Leftover cabbage slices can be roasted separately and used as a side dish.
  • For extra flavor, add chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme to the burger mixture.
