Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 6 Apples (such as Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and sliced about 1/2 inch thick)
  • 3 tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 cup Sugar

Pastry

  • 1 Sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  • 1 Egg (whisked, for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp Sugar (for sprinkling)

Glaze

  • 1/4 cup Powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) and line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Set the tray aside for later use.
  2. Prepare Apple Filling: Peel and core the apples, then slice them into approximately 1/2 inch thick pieces. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Stir in 1/4 cup of sugar until it creates a syrupy consistency, cooking for a couple of minutes. Add the apple slices and stir well to coat evenly. Cook the apples for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until they soften. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.
  3. Assemble Danish: Lay the thawed puff pastry sheet flat on the prepared baking tray. Spread the cooled apple mixture along the middle third of the pastry, leaving about a one inch border at the top and bottom. Cut the top two corners diagonally to form triangles, then continue to cut strips along each side of the pastry, approximately 6 to 8 strips total. Trim any excess pastry at the bottom. Begin folding the strips over the apple filling in a diagonal pattern, alternating sides from left to right, until all strips are folded over. Seal the top and bottom edges by pressing the pastry ends together gently.
  4. Apply Egg Wash and Sugar: Brush the entire surface of the assembled Danish with the whisked egg to create a golden finish. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar evenly over the top for added sweetness and crunch.
  5. Bake: Place the Danish in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the pastry is fully golden and puffed.
  6. Cool and Glaze: Remove the baked Danish from the oven and allow it to cool to room temperature on a wire rack. In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled Danish evenly.
  7. Serve: Serve the Easy Apple Danish at room temperature or chilled. The pastry will keep well for a few days if stored in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Choose tart apples like Granny Smith for a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity.
  • Allow the apple filling to cool slightly before spreading on the pastry to prevent sogginess.
  • Use a sharp knife or a pizza cutter to make clean strips in the puff pastry.
  • For extra flavor, consider sprinkling a pinch of cinnamon into the apple mixture while cooking.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 4 days.
