Ingredients

Scale

Sushi Rice

  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt

Fillings

  • 4 sheets nori
  • 1 cucumber, sliced into thin strips
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 cup cooked shrimp or crab meat
  • 2 tbsp sriracha sauce
  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Prepare Sushi Rice: Rinse sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Cook the rice according to package instructions, then season it while warm with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt, gently folding to combine.
  2. Prepare Fillings: Slice cucumber and avocado into thin strips and set aside. Prepare cooked shrimp or crab meat, ensuring it is clean and ready to use.
  3. Set Up Rolling Station: Cover a bamboo sushi rolling mat with plastic wrap to prevent sticking. Place one nori sheet shiny side down on the mat.
  4. Spread Rice: Wet your hands to avoid rice sticking and evenly spread about 1 cup of sushi rice over two-thirds of the nori sheet, leaving a gap at the edge for sealing.
  5. Add Fillings: Arrange shrimp or crab, cucumber strips, and avocado slices along the center of the rice-covered nori. Drizzle with sriracha sauce evenly for a spicy kick.
  6. Roll Sushi: Using the bamboo mat, roll tightly starting from the edge closest to you, applying gentle but firm pressure to form a cylindrical shape. Make sure to seal the edge with some water if needed.
  7. Slice Rolls: Dip a sharp knife in water to prevent sticking and slice the roll into eight equal pieces. Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds on top for added texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use freshly cooked and slightly warm sushi rice for best rolling results.
  • Wet your hands frequently to handle rice easily without sticking.
  • You can substitute cooked shrimp with crab or even imitation crab meat depending on preference.
  • Adjust sriracha to taste for desired spice level.
  • Use a very sharp knife and wet it before slicing to get clean cuts without squashing the rolls.
  • Serve immediately with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi if desired.
