Ingredients

Scale

Bread:

  • 1 loaf of day-old bread (French bread, challah, or brioche work great), cut into cubes

Custard:

  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Toppings (optional):

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cold and cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crock Pot: Grease the inside of your slow cooker with butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Layer the Bread: Place the cubed bread into the crock pot, spreading it evenly.
  3. Mix the Custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the Custard: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring they are all soaked. Press down gently on the bread.
  5. Add Butter: Distribute small butter pieces on top of the casserole for richness.
  6. Optional Topping: Combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Sprinkle over the casserole and add cold butter cubes for a sweet, crunchy top.
  7. Cook: Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or on high for 2-2.5 hours until set in the center.
  8. Serve: Cool slightly, then serve with maple syrup, fresh berries, or whipped cream.
