Ingredients

Scale

For the Dumplings

  • 2 (8 ounce) cans crescent rolls
  • 2 apples (Golden Delicious or Granny Smith)

For the Sauce

  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 cups lemon-lime soda (Sprite, 7 Up, or similar)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Dish: Butter a 13 x 9 inch baking dish thoroughly to prevent sticking and to add flavor.
  2. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and allow it to fully heat while you prepare the dumplings.
  3. Prepare Apples: Peel and core the apples, then cut each apple into 8 equal slices for uniform cooking.
  4. Wrap Apple Slices: Roll each apple slice in a crescent roll dough piece, ensuring it is fully covered, then place each wrapped slice into the buttered baking dish.
  5. Make Sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. Continue stirring until the mixture thickens slightly, then remove from heat.
  6. Add Sauce to Dumplings: Pour the thickened butter mixture evenly over the wrapped apple dumplings in the baking dish.
  7. Add Soda: Carefully pour the lemon-lime soda into the middle and around the edges of the baking dish, avoiding pouring it directly over the rolls to keep the dough from becoming soggy.
  8. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Serve: Allow to cool slightly, then serve the apple dumplings warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Use firm apples like Golden Delicious or Granny Smith to avoid mushy dumplings.
  • Do not pour the soda directly over the crescent rolls to keep them flaky.
  • Allow the sauce to thicken before pouring to ensure it coats the dumplings nicely.
  • For a richer dessert, serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • Check the dumplings a few minutes before the minimum baking time to prevent overbaking.
